Melbourne Bandicoot Break – 1 day wildlife tour

Day tour: A hands-on bandicoot and wildlife experience at Woodlands Historic Park – Melbourne

Put on a ranger’s hat! Located just a short distance from Melbourne city, the Woodlands Historic Park is home to some of Victoria’s most unique and very special wildlife. Red-gum grassy woodlands create a nature reserve protecting the endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot. This day tour lets you experience life as a ranger, and assist our local conservation heroes with important wildlife monitoring – check and re-set wildlife traps, collect data on captured animals and help release the bandicoots back into the wild.

You’ll enjoy close encounters with one of Victoria’s cutest endangered wildlife species, as well as other iconic Australian wildlife including Kangaroos. This is a great hands-on wildlife experience and an opportunity to experience one of Melbourne’s unique nature parks – and learn all about bandicoots.

Conservation Impact

Naturewise’s Eco Escapes allow you to play a vital role in the conservation of our natural environment, while enjoying some of Australia’s most spectacular places. Sadly, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot is now considered extinct in Victoria’s wild due to predation and loss of habitat. Help Parks Victoria and Conservation Volunteers save the species from extinction through a number of hands-on conservation activities. This research plays a vital role in helping us reinstate and monitor population numbers of the Eastern Barred Bandicoots at Woodlands Historic Park. Activities involve assisting with animal trapping, recording data including weight, gender, and condition of the captured animals, as well as their release back into the wild. Information collected provides critical information on the reserves bandicoot population numbers and supports the ongoing conservation efforts.
