Thala Beach is a Green Travel Leader

Naturewise & Thala Beach Nature Reserve achieve Green Travel Leader status

Naturewise Eco Escapes is thrilled to be recently recognised as a Green Travel Leader – alongside our partners Thala Beach Nature Reserve. We congratulate Thala on this outstanding achievement and recognition as a Green Travel Leader by Ecotourism Australia.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is located 16km south of Port Douglas, Queensland, and is the accommodation base for our pre and post tour options in Tropical North Queensland. Thala is Advanced Ecotourism certified by Ecotourism Australia, offering informative and meaningful guest experiences, whilst enhancing the local environment.

Naturewise Eco Escapes can make your booking at Thala Beach Nature Reserve for you (see below for rates and details); either as part of your tour, or as a separate booking.

Ecotourism Australia established the Green Travel Leader program in 2006 to recognise and award members who demonstrate a long-term commitment to ecotourism. Naturewise and Thala are two of 20 tourism operators to reach this significant milestone of ten year’s Ecotourism Australia certification. See the full list of 20 operators here. For more details about ecotourism certification please visit the Ecotourism Australia website.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve, Port Douglas - small

Thala undertakes several eco and conservation projects. Guests receive complimentary guided nature tours by onsite rangers including tree planting, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife and bird-watching tours. Thala has a completely organic 650 tree coconut plantation, and is home to a unique coconut odyssey tour highlighting the extraordinary qualities of the ‘tree of life’.

The 145-acre nature reserve is a private peninsular jutting into the Coral Sea, surrounded by World Heritage coastline and the Great Barrier Reef. The reserve has six unique habitats, with ancient littoral rainforest, casuarinas, mangroves, dry eucalypt woodland, forest and coconuts – each with its own unique flora and fauna.

The luxury lodge and bungalow-style accommodation have a prime position in the reserve, and are built out of natural sustainable materials in a low-impact style. Over the years, many indigenous plant species have been planted by the owners, Rob and Oonagh Prettejohn who bought the property in the early 1970’s, to rehabilitate the area back to its wild natural state.

Eco Activities

Along with supporting Naturewise Eco Escapes, Rob and Oonagh also support the environmental charity Australian Rainforest Foundation; employ wildlife specialists to guide guests in the forests, and along the beaches and rocky headlands; work with local indigenous groups to share their ancient knowledge and culture with guests; and employ sustainable processes which underpin their on-going Advanced Ecotourism certification with Ecotourism Australia.

Naturewise Eco Escapes welcomes our guests to join us staying at the retreat pre and post our North Queensland tours, including our upcoming 10-day camping adventure, Chilli Beach Marine Debris conservation project tour departing Cairns on 8 August 2017.
